 :: PRESS RELEASE ::
:: Daniel Pidala Wins A Thrilling And Dramatic Final

Sunday, June 01, 2008
Jason Crowe - SSA Media

Daniel Pidala is the official winner of a dramatic Oilfield Transport Services, WASCF Street Stock State Championship, held tonight at the Broome Speedway in the North of Western Australia.

The twenty eight year old Carnarvon Mechanic, led throughout the epic thirty lap race, which took an hour to run and had just eight cars from an original twenty one finish.

After three aborted starts, Bob Wakefield was involved in a crash, putting him on the infield after just 100 metres, and soon after was joined by Kane Munro and Jack Barnewall, as Wayne Thomson became the first of numerous drivers to be sent to the rear of the field.

Pidala opened up a commanding lead of nearly half a lap as the race settled down, as Shaun Reed and Clinton John became the next to retire. Daniel Ameduri was sent to the rear of the field on lap six, as Thomson started to storm back through the field.

Pidala again opened a handy lead, with Jeff Genev, Shane Kulker, Jamie Oldfield and Peter Herbert all in hot pursuit, as the race was run at a cracking pace.

At the half way mark, a major crash took out defending Champion, Matt Amato, brother Damien Amato, Clint Udecz and Wayne Thomson all on the back straight.

With half the race gone and half the field out of the race, Pidala continued to hold the lead as Oldfield put the pressure on Genev for the minor prize.

With ten laps remaining Pidala slowly started to come back to the field, but led by a handy margin from Genev, Oldfield, Odin Smith and Herbert, while Shane Kulker slipped back to sixth.

A five lap restart was called when Greg Avins was unable to get off the track with a flat tyre, leaving just nine cars to fight out the result.

Pidala started to slow dramatically as Genev and Oldfield tried to pass the Carnarvon based driver. Peter Herbert joined the challenge with three laps to go, setting up a grand stand finish.

Jamie Oldfield passed Genev on the outside on the last lap to finish second, just two car lengths behind Pidala. Jeff Genev was third while Peter Herbert finished fourth.

At the presentation, Peter Herbert was emotional, with his best ever result in a State Title. Jeff Genev was full of praise for all other placegetters, especially Oldfield, who passed Genev on the last lap. Jamie Oldfield was full of praise for the event, and his car owner, Rod Smith.

Quietly spoken Pidala was very happy with the win, and thanked his family, especially his father who puts tireless hours into the preparation.

Sadly, Genev and Herbert were disqualified after the race meeting at post scrutineering checks.

The State Title was the first ever to be held at the Broome venue and was a huge success, with massive crowds on both nights.
